The pdd module the most effective module personally. It enables me to reflect on my skills and proffesional development in order to make my self more focused within my direction of graphic design. I have begun to understand my specialism of branding layout and typography with work experience ahead I am keeping my options still open to show that I have a range of skills and can adapt my skills to any area within graphic design.
I have gained confidence within my design skills and especially feel confident within these areas. Although one large downfall is my presentaion skills. I was overall disipointed with my presentation I had spent time visually presenting it well however my oral presentation let the presentation down. I feel that I didn't get everything I wanted to say across to my audience. I missed out talking about the relation between graphic design and my dissertation and my work experience ambitions did not come across as well. Within the third year and over the summer I intend to improve this with interviews and work placements I plan to ensure that my presentation skills develop to a higher standard to ensure that I get across to my audience all the areas that I intend to talk about.
My blog and been able to link other blogs my blog has been useful. When reseraching into work placements I was able to follow thier blog keeping updated of new work and achievements. Over the year I have become more organised as the deadlines become tighter. I found the 3 briefs at the end of the course a real benifit to the development of my practise as a graphic designer. As I could balence my time around these briefs. If i got stuck with one brief I continued with another brief. Ensuring that I used my time effectivly.
Reseraching into different areas of work experience realy but my design practise into context. It made me realy think about where I wanted to be within graphic design as I begin a developmental intrest within creative branding layout information graphics and typography.
I WILL ensure that I continue this development through competitions, blog research and own intiated briefs. Iwill ensure that i get the most out of my work placements to ensure that I learn as much as I posibly can to ensure that I am focused more determinded and motivated to aim for my ambitions and goals.

This modal has taught me some personal skills of my own understanding my specialism to my challenges and my organisational skills. I feel that the module is highly important to the development of learning the necessary skills to become a professional graphic designer and preparing yourself for industry and work placements.
I have found my self interested in branding layout and typographic design. These are areas which I have used together to practise my skills. From the o2 brief in the first part of the module I struggled with the brief as I felt that the company was so well branded I often found my self wanting to make up another brand within o2 which wasn’t within the brief. I also found that I am quiet an independent designer and prefer to work on my own although as I have found my specialise to work with someone with a similar interest such as branding would perhaps be more productive and more developmental with my skills and understanding of my practise.

With my own time length with the brief set. I found that I shortened the time researching but lengthened the time doing hand idea generation. To which I then found I would spend less time wasting time on the computer. Such as the logo’s within type factory and property shop. I could find my self generating ideas quickly and productively as I could understand my market how they would use the brand and see the personality within the brand. I have a interest into how businesses run and make money and often think that good branding is necessary to making your company well known and how well your company comes across. Within it’s personality to clients and customers. I often find my self thinking how some brands and logos could be improved and how this would strengthen the business opportunities of some companies big and small.

I often found my self distracted by my personal professional development work placements sending e-mails and working on my portfolio based send out. I often found my self prioritising this over my work which may have left me feeling that I wasn’t pushing my self enough within the briefs.

Within the briefs I was overall satisfied with the outcomes yet I don’t feel that I aimed high enough within the briefs however I think that I feel this way as I felt comfortable as a designer specialising in typography , layout and branding. In comparisons to the digital module where I found my self struggling with software and testing my skills.

Within my next project I set my self to do I plan to keep to the branding typographic route. Within the type factory brochure I rushed the brochure and there where typographic elements that needed to be resolved and so I would like to make a brochure or multi page document to practise my layout and typographic skills learning through my mistakes to overall become a stronger designer. As stated early I often find my self looking at brands and seeing how they can be improved. In my own time as a personal practise I would like to take the logo and see how I as a designer could improve it to be more successful as a brand. My organisational skills can always be improved and I don’t feel that I have documented my development of my briefs as well as I usually do. I need to ensure I do document development for year 3 to cover the module guidelines within future projects. I also need to develop on idea generation and exhaust ideas to create a stronger outcome and higher quality outcomes such as some of my work I would have like to have printed properly down in digital print and photograph properly in context however due to the high demand of students wanting to print this wasn’t possible for my portfolio I will print the designs of properly and take better photographs to clarify the context of my designs to make the concepts stronger and shows my skills as a graphic designer.

Overall I feel that this module has being highly beneficial to my personal profession development as a graphic designer which I have enjoyed and feel more comfortable and focused for future briefs within year 3 of my degree.

Not my job. I'm Creative.

My art school was in Brooklyn.
They used to send us into Manhattan once a week, to learn from the pros on Madison Avenue.
One evening, while I was waiting for the class to start, I was sitting in a coffee bar on Times Square.
I noticed a black girl sitting at the counter.
She had a white Band-Aid on her leg.
I though, hang on, that’s supposed to be flesh-coloured Band-Aid.
But it’s not her flesh colour.
Why not?
Why shouldn’t flesh colour mean everybody’s flesh colour?
In fact, why not make Band-Aids in different flesh colours?
You could have Band Aids in Light, Medium, and Dark.
How cool would that be?
Then I thought, this could be an actual product.
In which case I could do an advertising campaign for it.
Which would be great because it would be a brief no one else would have in their book.
So I designed the packs, and wrote some ads.
One of them that went down really well, had the headline:
“NOW THERE’S A BAND-AID FOR QUEENS BOULEVARD, SOUTH TREMONT AVENUE, AND 125TH STREET.”
(That was a white area, a Puerto Rican area, and a black area.)
Then I thought, where would I run ads like that?
White people already have their flesh colour Band-Aids.
So I’m after Hispanics and Blacks.
Where do I find them?
Well, just like London, most of the people in cabs and cars are white.
Lots of the people on public transport aren’t.
So I’ll run them as posters on the NYC subway system.
And that was one of the campaigns I put in my portfolio.
In fact, that’s how I put my whole portfolio together.
Whatever it took to be different.
Everyone else was doing single ads, I’d do campaigns.
Everyone else was doing executions, I’d do strategies as well.
Everyone else was doing press ads, I’d do media plans as well.
If I’m doing what no one else is, I must look better at it.
Because I’m competing in a field of one.
Notice how different that was to the way youngsters do it today.
No one does an ad until they’re given a brief.
Well it’s not their job to write a brief.
So they call up various creative directors and ask if they have any briefs they can let them have.
Because they can’t be creative until someone gives them a brief.
They’re never going to be this free again in their lives.
They can be client, planner, account man, and media department.
For the only time in their lives, they can’t grumble about anyone else stopping them doing great ads.
And they don’t do it.
No one think about strategy, it’s not their job to do that.
No one thinks about media, it’s not their job either.
So everyone competes in the tiny little area of pictures and headlines.
And that little area is growing smaller and smaller.
And you know what?
It’s getting harder and harder to be different.
You now why?

Because it’s not a very creative way to think.

Not For Commercial Use (NFCU) is an ongoing idea/collaboration between Generation Press & Build, which started life as a discussion about the designer/printer relationship. 'Paste' is a series of unbranded posters, designed specifically to be pasted up anonymously around London. A post-card set was also produced (again unbranded) and sent out to create interest around the project and around the mystery posters. One of the paste sessions was filmed and edited by Richard Carroll and directed by Richard Bull, and can be seen here, and a paste up session in NYC (Directed by Timothy Saccenti). The culmination of 'Paste' is a catalogue documenting the project, with a foreword by Adrian Shaughnessy. Additional thanks to Maxalot & Commonwealth.

Art05 promo film / Arts Council England

‘Art05’ is the second annual awards ceremony, for outstanding achievements in the arts, organised by Arts Council England. This 20 second promo was created by filming 1300 tea lights arranged in the shape of the Art05 logo. We used various home-made grip equipment, which involved, amongst other things, mounting the camera on a skateboard and dropping the camera by fishing wire from a height of 7 metres using a home made fishing rod!

'Let There Be…' campaign / Corporate Couture Ltd

This sales presenter and brochure were produced for Corporate Couture (who trade as Genesis). We devised a campaign for them based around the tagline 'Let There Be…' (as in 'let there be light…'). The sales presenter was made using traditional bookbinding methods. the box is covered in faux leather and gold foil blocked. The brochure is A5 sized with 36 concertina folded text pages. The campaign also included a 2 minute film which was distributed virally.

Within typography I feel that I have learnt a considerable amount my knowledge and confidence with typography has strengthened hugely. I have an understanding of simple typographic skills such as how legible typography can be read to how we can force people to read across a line down a line or even up a line. I have also learnt about graphic design process through to the printing processes.
I feel that

Before beginning my typographic module I had a basic understanding of typography however I wasn’t clear of the terminology and some more advanced understanding. This module has benefited me, learning new skills such as prioritising typography which is a simple skill but when I combined with my design work I was constantly using new skills. Within my design work during the week I ensure that my type was being read correctly in the order that I wanted making sure that the colours worked with the typographic font, what was standing out and what personality my design was and the effect is was having on my audience. I began to understand that typography says so much about a design and is a high priority when creating designs.

The Typography Journal has been appealing and beneficial through lessons I have used my skills that I have learnt and researched into other interesting designs which has been motivating. Looking at how other people approach resolve problems such as small ads or business cards. I also found looking at colleagues in the groups work high beneficial & effective.
I have found interesting typographic work that is standard and experimental the range has been intriguing looking into different areas as well as some history of typography.
This practise is something that I will never forget as it will be a skill that I will always put into practise as my understanding and interest in typography grows.

My weakness overall I would say is my understanding of some of the more advance typographic terms. As this is an area that needs some more study perhaps through using my typographic journal and constantly using the language.
I also struggled with the packaging lesson and so this is an area for obvious improvement with future briefs. I may use this skill and develop this to test and develop my ability create packaging

To strengthen my Typographic Skills I will:

Carry on my typographic journal to investigate into more typographers and how typography is wrongly and correctly used in industry.

Constantly use my knowledge and new skills with my design work to develop my skills and create strong outcomes to their full potential.

I am beginning to imagine my c.v questioning what an employer would find exciting when given a c.v. This was an advertisement for a job in the drum magazine which included many different ways of recruiting people including this piece. The typography is placed in between each line of chocolates as just closely examine which chocolate you would like to eat. The concept works visually and is appealing to the reader as the objects used are visually engaging and to the right audience naturally get people to look an interact with an object so commonly associated with happiness and pleasure.

7. Contents of a police evidence bag for a court case

8. Top secret documents and blueprints for a British aircraft carrier

9. A hoax bomb that initiated an army investigation

10. Travel agency takings of £200,000 that was thrown away in black bin liners and required a major recovery operation

Other items identified in the poll included false legs, passports, anti-aircraft shells, the entire Saturday takings of a major shopping centre, old coins from 1820 featuring Queen Victoria and a week’s worth of family washing!

Since he graduated from Loughborough University two years ago with a Graphic Communication degree, Tom has been working at Chameleon, a design agency in Buckinghamshire. He also finds time for freelance work as well as designing and art-directing local magazine The Ride.

“I try to do what’s appropriate,” he says of client work. “It sounds obvious, but it’s very easy to let the style dictate the design, rather than the content.” A fan of the ‘less is more’ ethos, he prefers a “considered, economical approach” and cites Alan Fletcher, Wim Crouwel and Herb Lubalin as major influences. With clients including MySpace, NYLON magazine, Glasgow-based design firm After The News and Channel 4, Paul could be described as being in the second phase of his career. “I moved to London four months ago and I’m kicking myself that I didn’t do it sooner,” he admits.

Paul previously lived and worked in Glasgow, graduating from the Glasgow School of Art in 2003. He began his career selling and exhibiting screenprints in galleries, trying to make it as a ‘real artist’. The resulting publicity and media attention convinced him that he’d rather see his work in print than in a gallery. “I began applying my first love of pencil studies to the same print-making technique through Photoshop,” Paul explains. Hi All,

Yesterday evening i was walking towards my car when something lying on the floor next to the garbage room caught my attention.
It was an AKAI AA-6600 solid state amp (mfd. 1971) that looked in excellent condition. It immediately found it's way to the trunk of my car. The funny thing is that whoever threw it away took off the main power plug... They threw away a piece of history with a sound that you simply can't get today but bothered to keep a 30 cent plastic plug...
I've put a new power plug, plugged it in and... it works like a charm. The amp was never opened for repair in 34 years. The screws have no marks, no techinicians warranty stickers... amazing.
One of my friends that is currently using a cheap "Kenwood" amp is about to recieve a very nice gift tomorrow...
I just can't understand these people.
In the last 10 years or so, i got hold of the following in similar ways:
1. Harman Kardon 430 twin powered reciever (early 1970's)
2. Luxman R 1040 stereo reciever (NOS in the box, 1974, for 50$).
3. Sony ST-80 Tuner (late 1960's) - needed minor repair
4. Sony TAN 8550 VFET power amp (1974, outrageously expensive at it's time) - in it's original box
5. Leak mono block 7 watt tube amplifier pair (just needed new tubes and fix a broken wire)
6. Bose 301 speakers (early 1970's) that needed new woofer surrounds and new capcitors for the cross over.
7. Sony walkman Pro (late 1980's).
8. Nakamichi CR-5 cassette deck (needed a minor repair).

All except a few (guess which ones) which i just couldn't give away were serviced and given to my friends to their great joy.
Keep throwing these away people!

* A not-too-badly broken bench, that my friend Cathy helped me carry back to my Hoboken apartment from a nearby sidewalk. I repaired and painted it and used it for years, then I put it in the barn in NH, where my brother found it, took it home and used it on his sunporch for years. Then he put it back in the barn, where we refound it, painted it a new color and are now using it as porch furniture in Nottingham. How's that for getting a lot of use out of a broken thing someone else threw away???
* A set of four heavy, nicely made maple captain's chairs, which I took to NH, where they got a coat of oil based paint and are now terrific porch chairs - found in the trash in Clinton, NY.
* A chrome cup holder found in the Swap Shop at the Nottingham, NH dump, oops, I mean 'recycling center'.
* A matching pair of glass (!) candlestick lamps I pulled out of the metal dumpster at the Nottingham dump years ago.
* A very nice wood-framed mirror that had been painted but with minimum effort I refinished - found in a trash pile in front of a house in Clinton, NY.
* A chrome towel rack in a rubbish pile in front of a house on Williams Street in Clinton, NY.
* A set of 12 (12!) ironstone cups and saucers with gold trim, in the Nottingham, NH recycling center glass pile
* A pair of small vintage floral curtains that I sold on Ebay for $40 - found in the trash in an alley in Oxford, Ohio.
* A small antique Sarouk Persian rug, appraised to be worth $400 - found by my father in the trash in a rich Newton, Mass neighborhood.
* A pair of brand new, never been worn Birkenstok clogs - in my size! - found in the Nottingham, NH landfill back in the good ol' days when Nottingham still had an actual landfill you could scrounge around in - sigh...

I have to admit: I don't get it. Why would someone throw away something as basically useful and necessary as a kitchen trash can? I found each of these in the trash within just a few houses of where I live, over the course of just a few months. Each time, I assumed that it was broken or cracked, but I went to check it out anyway, because I'm always on the lookout for trash cans in which to pile up my 'green waste' (yard clippings, tree limbs, leaves, etc., that the city turns into compost). But each of these trash cans is fine. I just kept piling them up in my garage, and yesterday I gave them a pretty perfunctory cleaning, and so here they are: 3 perfectly good trash cans. Each one is made by Sterlite, which says something about just how ubiquitous their plastic products are. So, what do you think? Why do people just throw stuff like this away?
As an extension to my research I could look at the steralising subject investigating into the area of how objects may look once cleaned and what they would sell at Ifin full working order as an profit making experiment especially within the current market.

Thinking about health, the theme of the project, we were automatically drawn to this quote by Sartre: "Everything that exists is born for no reason, carries on living through weakness, and dies by accident".
It's a sentence that perfectly encapsulates many of the issues at stake: life, death, health, disease. As atheists, we cannot help but see the cruel meaninglessness of it all; a meaninglessness that can be both liberating and depressing. There's an ambiguity in the idea of a life without meaning; an ambiguity that we tried to incorporate in our poster in the form of a pink, day-glo darkness, lurking behind the surface. In short, we used the suggestion of a torn page to show the abyss that exists under the paper. After all, between us and the abyss, there is only the printed page.

1. What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

The skills I have developed through this module have been highly significant I feel that within this module I have learnt many new and vital skills within the printing process in order to for-fill my career of becoming a graphic designer. My understanding of the printing is much stronger and I feel more confident within the understanding and knowing the range of printing is vital for future projects to become more professional and aware of the printing industry around us. With in the summer I went on some work experience in Doncaster at a printers. The printers had a design side where I worked. I had some knowledge of print but felt I needed to know and understand in depth a lot more and so the module came at the right time for me as I could broaden my understanding of both colour & printing processes.

2. What approaches to generating work and solutions to problems have you developed and how have they helped?
Learning about the resources in and out of college has become a vital asset to my work and future work. To understand how the outcomes get printed was an area of mine that needed to be developed and so I feel that within my projects I will understand the limits that a project will take and to understand the clients needs within a professional industry.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?
The strengths within my work have been my organisational work although this is an are that always can be improved. I feel that within this module I have become more organised within my work and timekeeping in order to make me produce higher quality work and experiment more within my work. Although I need to start this from the beginning of the project in order to ensure that the development of my project is strong in order to create a stronger outrcome.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how could you exploit these more fully?
My weakness I feel have been research & development. I feel that within my work I sometimes have the tendency to stick to an idea in which I should experiment and develop other ideas to get the full potential of an outcome. This makes me produce poor research although I found my questionnaire to have a good outcome I felt that there could have been more primary & secondary research which may have produced a stronger outcome or perhaps would have given me a wider range of ideas.

5. Identify five things that you will do different next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?
Start my organisational skills at the beginning of a brief. Categorising parts of the brief that need to be forfilled.
Write a detailed time plan per week of what needs to be complete
Develop ideas further
Experiment and test with a range of ideas to ensure best & most appropriate outcome
Keep relating to target audience.

Water is never as beautifull as when it has been coloured and flavoured by all kinds of fruit syrups.
This set, made out of moulded-inflated glass, is based on the idea that people usually have trouble finding the adequat quantity of syrup they should mix with their glass of water to make it taste good.
By sloping like a Pisa tower, the glasses and carafe have an angle on the bottom. When the syrup has reached the top of the slope, users can then fill up the container with water.
The slope generates a graphical way to check the syrup level.

Yesterday I spent a day in the screen printing room and noticed that you can create foil stamping in there? This is a technique that I am going to be trying out as i feel it adds a certain depth to your work that has a glamourous affect to your work depending on the concept this is something that I will be testing.

Q. What were your early design influences? What drew you to graphic design?

Andy: Malcolm Garrett’s Simple Minds sleeves and TDK cassette packaging.

Huw: Printing. My mother had friends that were printer-makers - in the fine art sense - and I used to watch them avidly. They taught me about litho, we used stones and wax crayons instead of metal plates and films. I liked the process.

Paul: Probably the books and toys I had as a child.

Q. Do you feel that your education (design or otherwise) influenced the way you work now?

Andy: Leeds was very social and unpressured, I aspire to a working day that is like this! I found Derek Birdsall a big influence at the Royal College of Art.

Huw: In all honesty, probably not. It’s a crap cliché but I’ve learned more since leaving, although I’ve probably retained a methodical way of working that comes from learning chunks of exam revision verbatim.

Paul: Yes, it's the same pattern of “discuss, go-away-and-do-a-bit, then come back and discuss” that began in my A-level art group. Our art teacher, Mrs Savage didn’t follow a particular curriculum.

Q. Where did you meet and how did you start working together?

Andy: At the RCA from 1988 to 1990, I shared a studio with Paul and other founder member Nigel after Johnny Barnbrook moved out.

Huw: Paul was my tutor at Central Saint Martins (art school) and three years later I worked with Paul and Andy on an exhibition at the RCA.

Q. What were your earliest design commissions?

Andy: A logo for my best friend - a mobile hairdresser (stolen from an ERCO ad in Blueprint magazine) and local stuff in Leeds, then friends of friends’ shops and bands.

Paul: At school we found a group of break-dancers in an underground car park in Derby. We asked them to come into our school and do a gig. I designed the flyer - heavily influenced by the constructed typefaces in The Face, complete with halftone dots rendered in gouache.

Q. How would you characterise the perfect relationship between designer and client?

Andy: Mutual respect, un-bullshity.

Huw: One that trusts your opinion and appreciates that you are doing everything in your ability to give them the best job you can.

Paul: Relaxed, trusting and with no hidden agendas.

Q. What, if anything, do you consider to be your trademark?

Andy: GTF’s trademark would be the thoughtful consideration of purpose and production.

Huw: It would be good to think that it wasn’t as mannered as a trademark, but in reality, although you might try and avoid it, there are always going to be comfortable places that you go back to.

Paul: Unavoidable as it is, I hate the idea of having a trademark. I think our’s are self-evident.

Q. What would be your ideal job?

Andy: A Camper van concept for the new Volkswagen microbus.

Huw: Ever - in graphic design?

Paul: Probably something geeky.

Q. What is your favourite piece of your own work?

Andy: The Royal College of Art prospectus

Huw: Today it’s the General Electric logo and the deli just off the Ramblas in Barcelona with the full-bleed-product window.

Cravendale & YCN present Future Milk Design Competition
On Monday Cravendale, in partnership with the YCN, launched the Future Milk design competition. Future Milk is a design competition that is open to anyone over the age of 16, focusing on milk packaging in the next 50 years.
It encompasses both structural design and on-pack graphics. From now until 20th June people have the opportunity to submit their designs online, via Cravendale's website or through the post. People can also vote for their favourite 'Peoples Choice' design via the same link.
The best designs, as chosen by an influential design panel will win cash prizes (first prize is £1,000 then £300 and £200), a special Cravendale trophy created by the YCN and the chance of a work placement with one of the top London creative agencies.

Bullfighting is a cruel and unnecessary pastime in which the severely disadvantaged bull is tortured over a prolonged period before meeting almost certain death.
In a recent independent poll we learned that 89% of the British public would never visit a bullfight and that 76% believe it is wrong for the tourist industry to promote bullfighting.
The League Against Cruel Sports want to take that message to the tour operators, holiday companies and establishments that promote bullfighting to let them know that tourists in Britain want no part in this disgusting so-called tradition.
We are looking for talented designers to come up with a T-shirt design that promotes the ‘Balls to Bullfighting’ message. By the end of the summer we hope everyone from musicians to soap stars and comedians will be wearing the T-shirt with pride and saying … ‘Balls to Bullfighting!’

Who is the League Against Cruel Sports?
The League Against Cruel Sports is a charity which aims to rid society of cruelty to animals in the name of sport. The League care about how animals are treated and know that many, many people feel the same way through support for its campaigns for positive change.

Tyrrells chips UK are wonderful snacks into very good packs. I don't know the name of the agency who did it but I think that this design underlines the value of the product itself, adding some ironical images (in the basic line), some illustrations similar to the ones shown in botanical catalogues (in the natural line).
The use of typography is calculated and used to enhance a feeling of preciousness underlined also by the selection of images.

The simple concept of the most known gag –to slip on a banana skin– was the idea to represent humour. This idea could have been presented as an illustration, but perhaps it would be more interesting to take a picture of real elements with pre-designed signs, similar to what was done for MUSAC.

A 68-page promotional publication for the new Contemporary Art Museum of León, MUSAC, which focuses on art from the last 10 years.

PROCESS
The museum gave full free creativity for the layout, and the only aim when this book was given out at the ARCO’05 Contemporary Art Fair in Madrid was “to create a publication that people would keep as a collector’s item”. The idea was to create a special layout with a lovely typeface and some conceptual photographs to explain each area of the museum. Most of these photographs had some designed elements, which were first cut and put into the picture background, to be then photographed as real life elements. The art direction and the concept was definitely to make it special.

I found this quote in a smile in the mind book and thought it would be appropriate for my presentation as it appealed only to my audience of young creative people.
Our brain apparently has patterns to do basic jobs like how to know how to cross the road and analyze things creating patterns for mathematical areas however it is not designed to be creative so we must be very unique.
